Whisky Galore and Le Café Art Centre now trading as the Stray Dog have been awarded a Phoenix Award’s for their resilience following the Christchurch earthquake on the 22nd of February 2011.

Whisky Galore (no e in Whisky) is owned & run by Michael Fraser Milne and his wife, Stella.  They import and retail whisky.  After the earthquake, which resulted in their retail premises having to be demolished, they originally continued the mail order/internet portion of their business from warehouse.  They quickly found suitable new premises on the outskirts of the Christchurch CBD and outfitted these in the same style as their old premises.  They recommenced trading less than 5 months after the earthquake.

Le Café Art Centre was a café/bar/bakery in the Art Centre, a group of heritage buildings on the edge of the Christchurch CBD.  It was owned James Jameson and run by James and Steve McIntyre.  Their premises suffered significant damage which necessitated demolition.  They secured new premises (an old motor workshop), converted these to a café and bar and began trading again just recently. They have renamed the outlet to Stray Dog as they are no longer within the Art Centre.
